Ask any dentist and he’ll tell you: preventative dentistry is the best kind of dentistry. Preventative dentistry is the type of dentistry aimed at reducing the population of bacteria in your mouth to slow or even prevent the formation of cavities and treat gum disease.
Preventative dentistry has two main parts: your part and our part. Your part is by far the most important. First, you need to clean your teeth by brushing twice daily and flossing every day. Make sure you brush thoroughly for at least two minutes—use a timer to make sure you’re spending long enough brushing. When you floss, get between all the teeth, push the floss down to the gum line and curve it along the teeth on both sides of the gap. Your part also includes making your regular dental appointments so we can do our part.
Our part in preventative dentistry involves a more thorough cleaning as well as identifying emerging dental issues. During your routine appointment, we will remove tartar (also called dental calculus), which is actually fossilized bacteria film that collects in areas you regularly miss when brushing or flossing. Based on the build up of tartar, we may recommend changes to your regular oral hygiene regimen.
We will also evaluate your teeth to locate emerging problems so they can be treated before they become too serious. The sooner concerns about your dental health are detected, the more minimal treatment can be used and the better your natural teeth structure will be preserved.
If you are looking to protect your teeth for a lifetime of beautiful, healthy smiles, please contact Molson Park Dental in Barrie, Ontario to schedule an appointment today.

Oral hygiene keeps your mouth and teeth clean. An important health component, teeth cleaning prevents dental problems. To clean your teeth and mouth properly, your oral hygiene routine should include:
- Brushing your teeth and tongue at least twice a day.
- Flossing your teeth once a day.
- Visiting the dentist for a cleaning every six months.
Professional dental cleanings remove built-up plaque and tartar that cannot be removed with a toothbrush or dental floss. Our hygienists can show you the proper way to brush in order to remove plaque while preventing damage to the gums and enamel, including using a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently brushing at a 45 degree angle toward your gums.
Good oral hygiene prevents common dental problems, including:
Oral hygiene prevents these dental problems by reducing the food debris, bacteria and plaque on your teeth.
At Molson Park Dental Office, our dentists and dental team can suggest other ways to improve your oral health, including foods to avoid and which foods contribute to a healthy mouth.

There is really only one cause of cavities (also called dental caries)—bacteria inhabiting your mouth. These bacteria populate your mouth early in life, generally passed around in families from parents (generally the mother) to children.
The main culprit in cavity formation is Streptococcus mutans, bacteria that need a hard surface to live on, such as your teeth. Because they need this surface, the bacteria cannot inhabit a mouth that does not have teeth. However, by the age of two, most children have acquired a stable population of bacteria that cannot be eradicated, but can be controlled.
These bacteria form colonies on your teeth. Every time you eat, they eat, too. The food allows them to expand their colonies, and the thin biofilm of bacteria and their protective coating is what we call plaque. As the bacteria eat, they process sugars in your food into acid. This acid attacks your dental enamel. The indentations caused by the acid attacks give shelter to more bacteria, which in turn produce more acid to expand the indentations into deeper hollows, or cavities. The best thing about cavities from a bacterium’s point of view, is that they are safe from toxic saliva and pesky brushing, plus they trap food particles to ensure a steady supply for the lean times.
Once they form a cavity, bacteria will continue to expand it until they reach the interior of the tooth, where they will infect the tooth, causing an abscessed tooth, which requires endodontic treatment to correct.
Preventative dentistry is the best solution to reduce the population of bacteria and delay or stop the formation of cavities. To learn more about preventing cavities, please contact Molson Park Dental in Barrie, Ontario for an appointment today.

Porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry treatment used to correct a number of cosmetic tooth imperfections including:
- Chipped teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Gapped teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Short teeth
- Stained teeth
In addition to their versatility, porcelain veneers are durable and stain-resistant, which provides you with a beautiful, vibrant smile for years to come. Porcelain veneers are thin, shell-like layers of dental-grade porcelain that are permanently bonded to the fronts of your affected teeth.
Each porcelain veneer is custom-made to conform with your natural teeth, and they are tinted to match your existing teeth and provide a seamless smile.
Porcelain veneers look and function like your natural teeth, and they can preserve your teeth from further damage. Porcelain veneers are also easy to care for with proper dental hygiene, just as you would your natural teeth.
With a good oral hygiene routine that includes regular check-ups and professional teeth cleanings, your porcelain veneers can last a lifetime.
If you live in the Barrie or North York, Ontario, areas and would like to learn more about the benefits of porcelain veneers, please contact the Molson Park Dental Office to schedule your consultation with cosmetic dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick.

Occlusal splints are fast becoming one of the most popular treatments for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD).
Sometimes referred to as night guards, occlusal splints are custom-fit mouthguards that can cover one or both rows of your teeth. They have traditionally been used to prevent nighttime teeth grinding.
Because occlusal splints allow your jaw to settle into its natural position, which helps relax the tension in the connective area between your jaw and skull, they have also been effective in treating the painful symptoms that accompany TMJ/TMD. In addition to easing discomfort, occlusal splints can also help restore your jaw’s proper alignment.
Although occlusal splints are effective for many patients with TMJ/TMD, they are not the best treatment option for everyone. A consultation with Barrie, Ontario, dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick will assess your individual factors and determine if occlusal splints are the right choice for you.
If Dr. Chapnick does not believe that occlusal splints will be successful in relieving your TMJ/TMD symptoms, he may recommend another form of treatment.
If you live in the Barrie or North York, Ontario, areas and would like to learn more about your TMJ/TMD treatment options, please contact the Molson Park Dental Office to schedule your consultation with Dr. Adam Chapnick.

Neuromuscular dentistry is an area of dentistry that focuses on the relationship between the muscles, joints, bones, nerves and tendons in the connective region between your jaw and your skull.
This compact yet complex network affects your bite and jaw position. If you have a bite condition or misaligned jaw, excessive pressure can be placed on these components and lead to the painful condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD).
TMJ/TMD results in chronic symptoms that include:
- Intense headaches that are commonly mistaken for migraines
- Face, neck, back and shoulder pain
- Jaw tension and pain
- Jack clicking or popping
- Jaw locking or sticking
- Earaches
- Numbness or tingling in the hands and fingers
A neuromuscular dentist understands the relationship between these symptoms and can develop a custom TMJ/TMD treatment plan to treat your individual condition. Treatment may be as simple as correcting poor dental health habits or may entail the use of oral appliances.
If you live in the Barrie or North York, Ontario, areas and would like to learn more about neuromuscular dentistry or TMJ/TMD treatment, please contact the Molson Park Dental Office to schedule your consultation.
